ST GREGORY'S MINSTER KIRKDALE

CHRISTIANITY AMONG THE ENGLISH, which is now some 1500 years old, was probably only two hundred years old when the foundations of St Gregory's Minster were first laid in Kirkdale. Its tranquil setting in the lovely wooded dale alongside Hodge Beck gives shelter to this ancient minster, its cloud of witnesses from generations gone by, and its ongoing ministry to the modern world.

WORSHIP AT ST GREGORY'S MINSTER (weekly throughout the year) is ordered largely on the basis of the Book of Common Prayer. The Minster nurtures a strong choral tradition under the leadership of its Director of Music, John Hastie. The choir sings an increasingly wide selection of music at weekly services, from Gregorian Chant to present day composers.

The church community is pleased to welcome visitors from all over the world who, judging by their comments in the visitors' book, are delighted to find the church open during the day. During summer weekends, volunteer stewards are on hand to help people make the most of their visit. By prior arrangement it is usually possible for groups to be given a guided tour of this Grade 1 Listed Building.

For many years, the Parish of Kirkdale has been in Local Ecumenical Partnership with our daughter church, St Hilda's, Beadlam.

The church is open daily from 9.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or dusk, if earlier). There is an adjacent car park. The stone-flagged path to the church door is steep. A movable ramp for entrance to the church is available. Though space inside is limited, wheelchairs may be brought into the church. Assistance dogs are welcome in the church. An induction loop is used during services. Grid ref: SE676858. Postcode for SatNav: YO62 7TZ. From the A170, four miles east of Helmsley (or one and a half miles west of Kirkbymoorside) turn off into minor road (signposted St Gregory's Minster, opposite signposting to Welburn). Follow signposting about half a mile to the church. See also the Locator in the links at the top of the page.

ST GREGORYS MINSTER CHOIR welcomes new members with a good ear, the ability to read music and a love of Church music.  Please ring Gordon Mellor, choir member and Churchwarden for more information: 01653 668320.

Parishioners, particularly Lindisfarne pilgrims, might like to know that Carole Readman, sister of Kay Lund, is bringing her choir to FOSTON CHURCH (near Castle Howard) on Saturday 21st April 2018, at 7:30 PM. Fuller details will shortly be posted here. Carole's choir has in the past sung at St Gregory's Minster and has recently sung in various other venues, including (as Kirkdale pilgrims will know) St Mary's, Holy Island.
